About

Annie Laurie with Variations is a guitar duet arrangement inspired by William Vincent Wallace’s piano variations on the famous Scottish ballad. The piece was created during the production of Bruce Paine’s Alberton DVD as part of a tribute to the music-loving Kerr Taylor family, whose historic Auckland home remains a landmark of cultural life.

While the arrangement follows Wallace’s original format, new ideas and adjustments bring the work into the idiom of the guitar. Colourful in both sound and story, the piece is connected to New Zealand through Wallace’s own adventures — including his outlandish claim of once being captured by rebel Māori while touring the country with his violin.

The music lasts about 4½ minutes and is scored for two guitars with slight differences in tuning. It was first recorded by Bruce Paine and Rex Button for the Alberton DVD and CD, later broadcast on Radio New Zealand Concert alongside other Alberton-inspired works.
